WARRINGTON GUARDIAN
A STUDENT from Warrington has been crowned Britain's Best Young Photographer' by a world-famous picture agency.
Hollie Cookson, aged 18, from Kingswood, impressed the judges with her depiction of life in the north west, which including a stunning image of a barber shop in Penketh.
Now the art foundation student wants to finish her studies before embarking on a career as a professional photographer and says the top accolade is a big plus on her CV. "I'd love to work for a picture agency or maybe even go freelance and cover concerts," says Hollie, who's love of photography developed when she got her first camera aged 13. Her prize includes spending a day with a Getty photographer in London and she hopes to cover either a big sporting occasion or a red carpet event packed with celebrities. After stumbling upon the competition while surfing the Internet in the summer, her three entries: a workman eating fish and chips, a barber cutting someone's hair and a woman at an empty bingo hall, were soon impressing the judges. She says it felt like a dream' when she got a call from Getty saying she had won."I'm overjoyed that someone has recognised that I'm quite good at photography," she says, modestly. "It's an honour." She says the secret to her success is capturing her subject doing something from afar so that they are unaware and so the picture tells a story about them.
Her parents are also proud having bought her her first camera and supported her in her hobby. "She has been involved in photography from a very early age, taking pictures on holiday, so we're very proud," said dad, Martin.

"I had the best day of my life! Being on the red carpet and wearing my press pass sticker said it all - I wore it with pride and felt very privileged to be there. "Hollie is a highly-talented young photographer who has the drive and determination to succeed. As someone who is just starting out in her career, she did very well on the red carpet and in the press room and showed some creative flair in her photographs."Dave Hogan

LONDON – Teen amateur photographer, Hollie Cookson from Warrington, has been awarded the title of Britain’s Best Young Photographer in the national Getty Images’ My Britain young photographer competition. Judged by renowned figures in photography from Getty Images, the competition asked young budding photographers from across Britain to submit images which reflected their life, community and feelings of what it’s like to be a young person living in Britain today. Hollie’s photos take a very honest look at life in the North West and depict everyday moments such as capturing life in a hairdressing salon in Warrington, a workman eating fish and chips in his lunch break in Widnes and a lone gambler playing the slot machines in a bingo hall in Preston. Whilst they are affectionate and humorous images, they also yield to a slightly darker side of British society. Competition judge, Adrian Murrell, Global Vice President, Editorial, Getty Images, said: “Hollie’s pictures stood out because they are very memorable British images, which capture plenty of emotion. As well as being technically very strong, she captures her subjects unawares which is a very hard thing to do. Overall, the standard of entries has been magnificent. It has been a wonderful experience to have this unique insight into how young people feel about the places where they live and how they go about capturing those feelings through photography.” Hollie, 18, beat off shortlisted regional winners to win the exclusive prize of a one-day internship with a Getty Images photographer in an area of her choice including news, sports, entertainment or creative photography. She was thrilled to find out she had won, saying, “Being the overall national winner is one of my greatest achievements and has really spurred me on to pursue my life long career ambition of becoming a professional photographer. The competition really stood out for me because I saw it as a challenge to try and capture what it’s really like to live in the North West.”
